Meet Natalia, our Communications Lead

We sat down with Natalia to talk about the work she does at REFEO, the experiences that motivated her to join our team and why she is so passionate about supporting refugees and people seeking asylum.

I originally studied English Literature and later on became interested in migration and the experiences of migrant women. I then did a master’s degree in Cultural Studies in Canada where I focused on the migration of women who moved to Canada for romantic relationships. I got involved a lot in volunteering and helping organisations with activism and supporting migrants.

A lot of my work focuses on our social media and the website. I am also a trustee so I help with the strategies of REFEO and its operations. I support our communications, make sure our name is out there, and make it clear to people what we do, as well as reaching supporters.

What motivates you with this work?

This issue is very personal for me. I came to the UK as a migrant, and I feel solidarity for anyone who has come from somewhere else. Making time for volunteering is giving back to everyone in my life who is a migrant as well as helping to give a voice to those of us who are affected by the UK’s hostile environment immigration policy.

The situation for refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK is very difficult. The rights of people seeking asylum have been eroded in the UK and this has a direct impact on the rights of every other migrant, so it is an issue that concerns us all. This work is about doing something tangible for people to have equal rights. It is so important for people to be able to access any job or education, as well as to be able to choose what job and education they want. I want people to have the support and mentorship to be able to achieve the employment opportunities they aspire to have. Refugees and people seeking asylum, like everyone, should be able to choose a meaningful job and education.

Overall, volunteering has been very rewarding and the people I have met have been wonderful. I love to read how people we have supported have benefited from our work.

What is your favourite place in the world and why?

My favourite place is my mom’s garden in Mexico City. She is a botanist and loves plants and puts so much love and dedication into our family garden. I always feel safe and have a lot of memories growing up in this garden and spending lots of sunny winters there.

What brings you joy?

Trying new things brings me joy. Recently I went roller skating and it was amazing and I loved it. It makes me feel fresh and it helps to focus my mind on something new and different so I can be present. It also helps me to build hope.
